Clear, recognised progression

Our lessons follow the Swim England framework, supporting children to progress through recognised stages as confidence and ability grow, at a pace that feels right.

Duckling

From early water curiosity to basic independence, Duckling classes help babies and toddlers acclimate at their own pace. With playful, gentle guidance, and parent-supported practice, children build comfort and confidence in the water, laying the emotional and physical foundations before moving into structured Learn to Swim lessons.

Stage 1

This first formal swim stage focuses on water confidence and familiarisation. Children learn to enter and exit safely, move in different directions, and float on front and back while becoming comfortable with water on their face and head. It’s the foundation of confidence in the pool for all future stages.

Stage 2

Stage 2 continues to build independence and comfort without flotation aids. Children begin safe entries, blow bubbles, float unsupported, and travel with basic leg action, gaining confidence in movement and breath control. It’s where the fundamentals of independent water skills come together.

Stage 3

At this stage children develop streamlined movement, coordinate front and back travel, and demonstrate simple rotations and exits confidently. It’s a progression of skills that help them feel more at ease moving through the water and stronger in their control.

Stage 4

Stage 4 introduces core stroke technique and coordination. Children begin combining body position, leg kick, arm actions and breathing rhythm as they learn shape changes, integrated movement and efficient travel through the water with increasing confidence.

Stage 5

Building on earlier stages, Stage 5 emphasises improved stroke technique and stamina. Children develop treading water, sculling skills, and begin refining their ability in recognised strokes — helping them swim further with controlled energy and technique.

Stage 6

In Stage 6 swimmers continue refining all recognised strokes and develop skills needed for more coordinated and confident swimming. The focus shifts to movement quality, control, and consolidating what they’ve learned so they can swim smoothly and efficiently.

Stage 7

Stage 7 brings all four strokes together with technique, stamina, and extended swimming ability. Children swim further distances, link skills into routines, and may begin to dive and develop a more advanced understanding of water movement and endurance.
